Dieffenbachia

Today's plant is dieffenbachia — also known as the dumb cane plant — it is one of the top ten most popular houseplants out there.

Dieffenbachia is often grown as a houseplant and is known as the Dumb Cane or Leopard Lily. But I had to give it away when someone told me that it is a poisonous plant.

I guess dieffenbachia is indeed one of the poisonous plants. The plant sap contains calcium oxylate, a chemical compound which causes swelling of the tongue and throat.  We should keep this plant out of reach of small children or pets.  This is the reason for the common name “Dumb cane.”

I had brought this plant in 2017 but gave it away because the kids were small! I was scared to keep it at home though it was growing well. It's still growing in the society garden!

But a sad thing happened yesterday!

Minnie broke the pot of the Alocasia plant. Since it was dark in the window, I replanted it in another plastic pot in the morning! But it has lost its charm for a while. The leaves are torn and broken! The beautiful plant is looking extremely sad!

Hope it grows well again! I have rearranged all the plants in the window garden!
